I'm naming this photo the Best of the Magic City for the week beginning May 4. Go ahead and add it to the Best of MCFG group and start sloughing through the pool to pick the next honoree.

This type of sign is called a Roto-Sphere. About 230 of them were made and there are only about a dozen left. More about them here:

This one has been replaced by a Walmart. I don't know if it was stored or if it just went to the scrap metal yard.

Word is that the spiky-space-star survived and was salvaged by a sign man from Tarrant or Pinson or somewhere who is restoring it. As luck would have it the colors for the neon tubes (which had been missing for years) were noted on the interior. This news from Tim Hollis.

Thanks! I'll get ahold of Tim then.

Roto-Spheres were actually shipped from the manufacturer to the purchaser with just a coat of primer on them. The customer told the local sign shop what colors they wanted for both the spikes and the tubing.

Good news! I spoke with the guy that's restoring the sign and it's in good hands. It's not been decided where in B'ham it will be resinstalled but it will definitely be back.

I do have photos and info about the restored Roto-Spheres in Memphis, TN and Moriarty, NM as well as others here:

That's good to hear. Nice page. I never new there was a name for that type of structure.

It looks like it could have been modelled after Sputnik. Pretty cool.

Actually, it was modeled after a Christmas ornament. Have a look at the link two posts above yours.
