On Saturday, 12th September 2009 young patients from Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, their families, and employees of Truvo Ireland gathered together in Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane to celebrate the launch of a very special art exhibition. The Truvo Gets Mugged Children’s Art Competition - hosted by Truvo Ireland - was conceived to support the hospital, their designated charity partner for 2009 and to discover an inspirational piece of art for their workplace to assist them in their endeavour to become more environmentally responsible. The talented children were delighted to receive their prizes and certificates from none other than Fair City’s Damien, aka Maclean Burke!
The Truvo Gets Mugged Art Competition was launched in the gallery on July 1st. Since then, patients in the hospital were busily working on their pieces. In July, Truvo arranged for two professional artists to visit the hospital over two days and give workshops to children on every ward. Children of all ages and abilities took part in these workshops. Regardless of their condition or illness; art is something every child can engage in. The competition was generously and enthusiastically sponsored by Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, who got on board from day one and have been an integral part of the initiative. Also a major supporter were The Art and Hobby Shop, who not only provided an array of art materials for the workshops, but provided the Play Department in the hospital with enough art supplies to last the year!
The competition resulted in some stunning artwork by patients from the hospital whose creativity and imaginative interpretation of the theme ‘My World’ stunned all the judges. From the avant-garde to surrealism, post-impressionism to minimalism, the range of styles and treatments has been impressive.
At the exhibition launch, the 16 finalists, across four age categories, eagerly awaited the results, read out by Fair City’s Maclean Burke. All finalists received prizes and certificates and four overall winners won a unique accolade… The competition is not called Truvo Gets Mugged for nothing! Following the month-long exhibition running in the Gallery until 8th November 2009, the winning artworks will be produced on mugs for all Truvo Ireland employees! These unique, limited-edition mugs will replace disposable cups throughout the company as artistic endeavour and environmental awareness merge.
The charity partnership between Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital and Truvo Ireland has been so successful that it looks set to continue into the future, who knows what dreams may come of this?
