Paula Scher

Cindy Vazquez Zavala

This illustration reminds me of both a map and a graph of a function that is used in mathematics: calculus. The lines connote direction, distance, and movement from a to b. She uses thick lines to create importance and focus whereas skinny lines to represent the non important and as a background. The use of basic geometric shapes such as circles and rectangles are used to signify the importance and description of locations. Circles integrated with lines, in calculus, signify discontinuity. In this illustration, it signifies an important location and continues with its direction. In addition, the use of vivid primary and secondary colors make this illustration very basic but it creates intensity with the use of thick lines. Thick lines produces dark values of each hue and is a way to capture the attention as the foreground. Paula is not using any implication of texture in this illustration; she uses plain smooth lines.
