Tårnhuset, St. Hanshaugen, Oslo
Oslo, St. Hanshaugen, christmas 2008.
Tårnhuset (The Tower House) is now a kindergarten. The basin in front of it is now a water fountain (albeit closed in winter, like in this shot.)
But the building with the tower overlooking most of Oslo and the basin was built ca. 1870 to 1875 as city water reservoir. The high point in the city was ideal for distributing water in the nearby areas. The water reservoir was active well into the second half of the 20th century, as shown by this tale (sorry, Norwegian only).
The only reason I posted this shot was that the Flickr blog posted a message about 169 photos from Scandinavia taken during the 1890's have been posted by the US Library of Congress under the Flickr Commons program in this set.
I'll post a link to the image showing a panorama of Oslo (Christiania) taken during the 1890s below. The photo was no doubt taken in from the tower of this house.
