Italian Expedition that came back from G-2 (I think). Notice how they fit into just 2 'grooves' of the glacier. You lose sense of scale up there!

Southern face of K2, the second highest mountain in the world at 8611m; the northern face is in China

Broadpeak (8047m)

Godwin-Austen Glacier (5000m+), leading up to K2; that's a 5 hour trek to K2 across just this glacier without backpacks. Then 5 hours back to Concordia

Further on, is the Conway Saddle where Pakistani and Indian armies are camped out at 6000m, watching over the tenous line of control. The Pakistani soldiers we met said the wives of the Indian officers wave at them and tease them from across the line.

if this is K2, shouldnt it be taller?

It is taller but but looks lower because it is farther from the point the picture was taken. Besides, you can't see the peak because of the clouds.

Awesome picture!
Distance can surely shrink the mountains... I've found it as a rule of thumb that when picking a mountain to climb, multiply how tall it looks to you by about 500 and you'll get pretty close. :)

This picture also shows the scrapes in the glacier very well.
