HR2881 Subtitle C - Fees for FAA Services

Looks like congress will approve this one soon. H.R. 2881 is the bill that the AOPA and the NBAA pushed, up to and including selling a t-shirt (worn by AOPA Prez Phil Boyer, no less) which states, "Stop User Fees. Support H.R. 2881." As you can see, this bill calls for new and unprecedented user fees for pilots and aircraft owners.

I have never paid the FAA a penny for anything. Next year I will likely have to pay at least $84 a year in FAA medical fees in addition to the $160 a year I already pay the Flight Surgeon. So, from $0/year to $84/year. How do you calculate the percentages on that?

The AOPA says this bill is a victory because there were other bills which were much worse, so I'm supposed to settle for this one.

	Kaptain Krispy Kreme says: It was reported Wednesday on DallasNews.com that President Bush supports user fees and is threatening to veto any bill that doesn't give the airlines the tax breaks they want. I assume his intention is to reward them for decades of mismanagement. HR 2881 was amended late Tuesday to remove the user fees shown above, and replace them with 'fees to be determined by the FAA at a later date,' or something to that effect. 	Kaptain Krispy Kreme says: Specifics are difficult to come by since things are so fluid right now. But yes, we're probably fucked no matter what. H.R. 3539 is the document the Senate Ways and Means Committee passed Tuesday that altered the fee verbiage. If I'm reading it correctly, there's a loophole for future fees T.B.D. 	Kaptain Krispy Kreme says: House passed H.R. 2881 today with 267-151. That would leave 17 that didn't vote. No word yet on the Senate measure. The house would need 23 more votes to override Bush's threatened veto. But with the current FAA funding set to expire at the end of this month, that may be enough incentive for a few Congressmen to change their vote to yes. Some Congressmen opposed to the bill site concerns over a provision which would reopen a disputed contract with air traffic controllers, including nearly $2 billion in back-pay. Interestingly, this bill also contains a (weak, IMHO) airline passenger bill of rights, and allows airline pilots to fly until age 65 under certain conditions. Google News Posted 11 months ago. His future Secret Service protection will be withdrawn after 5 years (I Recall) by executive order by the former Prez in a move on the way out....
