Hoces del Duraton

Hoces del Duraton

Hoces del Rio Duraton (the Duraton Canyon) at sunset. Near Sepulveda, Segovia Province, in central Spain.

I was hoping for these clouds to really set on fire, but within minutes of taking this shot they had completely gone. Good reason to go back again! There is an important vulture colony breeding in the canyon walls on the left side of the frame (apparently Spain's largest), and huge birds fly within literally a few meters of the visitors to this exposed spot, it was amazing to hear the wind in their wings as they fly by.

Buckskin Gulch III

Buckskin Gulch III

The debris of past flashfloods, enormous tree logs and branches are stuck 40 feet high up the canyon walls. They are a stark reminder of the forces of nature that are occasionally unleashed on Buckskin Gulch. With no escape route, and impossible to outrun, a hiker caught in such a flood would stand little chance of survival.
