Yikes! As a recovering academic librarian, this sends chills down my spine! I _guess_ can understand the need for it in a PL, but I'm glad to see that the library is also offering one on one computer classes - for free! I guess the thinking is that there are just some people you can't convince to commit to learning? Hm.

Unbelievable. $5 for 1/2 hour for helping patrons? I am wondering why they deserve to be paid when they are NOT helping patrons.

To clarify, the charge is not to help or assist. The charge is for doing the work FOR the patron, not with the patron. For example, a patron walks in and says "I need six resources on topic X with full citations. Will you do that for me?" The patron's choice is to either sit at a computer and be guided or walk away and come back tomorrow for the results. The second option is what they charge for.

Great idea but the sign is a bit ambiguous. How 'bout something a bit more upbeat or cheeky?

'Don't have time to waste on the internet? Hire a librarian instead.'

'Do you hate photocopiers? Hire us to tackle them for you'

'Hire a librarian! Available for internet searching, photocopying, scanning, image editing...'

Any other ideas???

As somebody who works in a public library, I think this is a good idea. We usually have two staff people on the desk doing EVERYTHING! Circulation, reference, computer assistance, answering the phones, etc. , some computer questions can take a long time, depending on how computer literate the patron is you could be working with them anywhere from 30-60 minutes.
