In Turkmenistan, General Skobolev is not admired. His forces slaughtered the defenders of the fortress at Geo Tepe and then chased down and killed the escaping survivors of the battle--including women and children. But in Bulgaria, the General is a hero, as he commanded the Russian Army that helped the Bulgarians defeat the Ottoman Turkish forces at the decisive battle of Shipka Pass. Not long after, Bulgaria achieved the first measure of independence from the Ottoman Empire, and over the next 40 years, the Empire itself disintegrated.
