yes, Jasmic, this does hurt, on a number of levels. i think it's premature to be demolishing buildings before all law suits are resolved. also, some of these buildings could have been renovated and reused, and so it's a waste of resources and the needless destruction of some unique and interesting architecture that give the hood character. and, the vacant lots created will probably persist for years as trash-strewn eyesores or parking lots. just what we need.

The problem is the corporations who do this (and unfortunately this sort of thing doesn't just happen in your neck of the woods) rely on the fact that once they start knocking places down people cannot be bothered to do anything about it. and any fines are swallowed up by the huge profits they make.

so true. luckily, there are quite a few dedicated people who are bothering to do something about Atlantic Yards (Develop - Don't Destroy Brooklyn, for example), but we are up against a very wealthy developer with friends in high places, so it's a steep, uphill battle.
