Knarrarósviti er hannaður af Axel Sveinssyni verkfræðingi eftir hugmyndum Guðjóns Samúelssonar húsameistara. Í hönnun vitans birtast áhrif frá fúnkis- og art nouveau (jugendstil) stefnum í húsagerðarlist sem voru dæmigerðar fyrir Guðjón.
Meðal annarra verka hans eru Hallgrímskirkja og Þjóðleikhúsið.

Knarrarósviti er byggður 1938-1939 og var fyrsti viti á Íslandi byggður úr járnbentri steinsteypu. Vitinn er 26,2 metrar á hæð og er hann hæsta bygging á Suðurlandi.

This lighthouse is designed by the engineer Axel Sveinsson and influenced by the ideas of Icelandic State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson. It´s design is a blend of the functionalism and art nouveau (jugendstil) styles, typical for Mr. Samúelsson.
Among his other works is the Hallgrímskirkja church and the National Theater in Reykjavík.

Built in 1938-1939 it was Iceland´s first lighthouse built of reinforced concrete. The lighthouse is 26,2 meters (86) feet high and is the tallest building in South-Iceland.
