Bill & Peggy: together at last!

What:
Hurricane Bill puts the moves on Peggy's Cove!

Where:
Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada

When:
Just after Hurricane Bill passed us and the road to Peggy's Cove was re-opened.

About:
We didn't get the full force of the hurricane here as it passed to the east of us over the Atlantic Ocean. But when it did pass by the tide was high and the storm surge made for incredible waves. The main road to Peggy's Cove was closed down as the waves were washing right over it and leaving huge rocks and seaweed on the highway. They also closed the road into Peggy's for most of the day. By the time I got there the rain had pretty much stopped and the tide was low but the waves were bigger than I have ever seen there before. I stayed until it was totally dark.

This shot was taken from about a mile or two up the road from the lighthouse near the Swiss Air monument. Notice the sea spray and fog that was in the air. The weather seemed to change every few minutes all evening. I kept waiting for the sun to peak through the clouds to light up the waves. I am zoomed it all the way here so it's not as sharp as I would like makes me want to go out and get that 70-200VR f/2.8 Nikkor but it is over $2g here in Canada! :-(

Video:
If you want to see how big some of those rogue waves were check out this great video from the time lapse webcam at Peggy's Cove.

Sorry I haven't been by to visit much over the weekend but with my main computer still being down and the power outage from the storm I have had very little internet/computer time. In fact I ended up processing this shot from work using the online Picnik software! Woohoo!!

Have a great week my friends, see you soon...

That is one angry sea. Fabulous imagery Dave...it's a great account of the power of nature, even if Billy had fizzled out somewhat.

Haha Dave you're such a smooth criminal.

" I am zoomed it all the way here so it's not as sharp as I would like :-("

David I think if the picture was 'tack' sharp it wouldn't be as pleasing as it is. Great image, should be printed large and hung on the wall (:

  9. LibraSpirit Images (12 months ago)

    Totally excellent!

  10. Killienutz (12 months ago)

Spectacular. You can really see the power of the storm.

I love angry seas but I find them a bit scary too. Just a bit though! :)
This is lovely, Dave. I'm just glad Peggy survived the fight with Bill.
Oh, I'm also glad you kept safe on higher ground! LOL
Have a great week, my friend. xox

  13. Nancy Rose (12 months ago)

I was wondering if you got out to take some pics.
I have seen huge waves, but never from a hurricane out here.
    Still a cool shot buddy.

AWESOME shot!!! I LOVE a good Hurricane. Back when I worked for the newspaper, I was always the one idiot driving towards the ocean when everyone else was evacuating the coast.

    Awesome capture!

  22. Jill Clardy (12 months ago)

So dramatic and powerful - I'm sure Peggy has had the moves put on her by more persuasive opponents and has rebuffed each of them....

Nice shot. When I was there, it was dark and I had to push the ISO up to get a decent shot

Great shot Dave, was an amazing day. Makes one ask why someone would live out there though.

  33. Jill's Junk (12 months ago)

Spectacular shot Davey. I'm glad they had the forsight to close the road into Peggy's Cove after hearing about the people swept off a lookout in Acadia NP.

Great shot Dave...but I must say...what a wuss...waiting until the rain stopped. Seriously though, an excellent capture.

  39. Justin Smith - Photography (12 months ago)

Nice! We had some sweet waves here in Massachusetts yesterday, as well. It makes me a little jealous that they get that kind of stuff on the west coast just about every day.

  40. Chris Gidney1 (12 months ago)

Great one Dave. I didn't venture anywhere near that area, on tv it looked like there was so much traffic.

  41. DolliaSH (12 months ago)

    Thanks so much everyone!

Hey Terry, I was down around Prospect first and got soaked to the bone in the rain. I also heard that they closed the road to PC. I went home and got changed and then decided to take a drive to PC anyway just in case I could get near it. I've always wanted a shot there with waves. I got lucky when I got there that they had opened the main road. The road into the village was closed to all but residents and press though.

    wow! spectacular scenery!

  45. JMW Natures Images (12 months ago)

I think even with that $2K lens there would be some softness. That is a lot of mist in the air. I think the softness here is acceptable and reasonable given the conditions. Besides I like it...just the way it is.

  46. hjalmar1886 (12 months ago)

Awesome! Love the power and lighting. Fantastic capture, Dave!!!

  47. CH®iS (12 months ago)

I like the mist, this is a great shot for my tastes . . . you might try an unsharp mask at 30/60/1, it works great for haze, but I don't think it will make an appreciable difference with mist.
