Hillary Clinton: Pioneer, Hero, Winner

Hillary Clinton: Pioneer, Hero, Winner by Tony the Misfit.
The discrimination that women have faced - throughout history - has been enormous. It is hard sometimes for a man to understand because we live our lives with a male-oriented viewpoint.

n addition to the discrimination faced by members of all ethnic and religious groups, women have also faced the special discrimination based on gender.

Women were slaves, just like men, under the Constitution. Additionally they were not legally given the right to vote in national elections until 1920 - with the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment.

They have, generally speaking, been discriminated against in matters of religion - remember the Salem Witch Trials, for example? Perhaps it started with Eve being portrayed as seducing Adam - not the other way around!

In any case, whatever you believe, one of the biggest barriers has been the absolute dominance of (white, Christian) men in holding the office of the President of the United States since 1788 and dominating the numbers in the House of Representatives and Senate as well.

In the 2008 election we had two candidates - each strong and dynamic - on the Democratic side of the aisle that changed history. Senator Barack Obama won the party nomination, breaking a racial barrier. Senator Hillary Clinton , for all practical purposes, had as many popular votes and ALMOST as many delegates supporting her.

Regardless of viewpoints, causes and campaigns, we can say this; Senator Clinton shattered a "glass ceiling" into a million pieces. She proved the equal of any man in the political arena. She remains a role model for tens of millions of people around the globe. She continues to be a major force in American politics while establishing herself at the forefront of American civil rights history.

I concur Tony and hope that we continue to have strong female candidates from all walks of life. Had she rose up without the 8 years as first lady she would have been a more attractive candidate IMHO. Too much baggage at a time when we really need new perspectives. It's been an exciting election year so far and promises to get even better.

Cynthia McKinney is the better candidate and has the interests of the people in mind, unlike Mrs. Clinton.

Yes, Rebekka, there are better candidates. I think Hillary could have behaved better during the campaign - she made many mistakes. On the other hand, the reality is that Hillary broke many previous barriers and deserves credit for that.

I understand McKinney is now out of the Democratic party, she is an independent, perhaps in the Green Party. I was a member of the Green Party for over a year - in Arizona. I know that McKinney is a true progressive, which I am also.

I am focused on electing Senator Obama and worked for him in the Pennsylvania primary (I did a photojournal on Flickr of his rally there). I will continue to actively work for his election.

I believe we need to unite to defeat McBush. That, to me, is the #1 goal of this political year for the America and the world.

Thanks for posting your opinion.

No problem Tony.. I got a million of em. ;)

And yes McKinney is running on the Green party ticket. I just wish someone like her could actually make it to the top of the playing field one of these days. But if horses were wishes...

I wish more people voted for third parties. I don't think things will really change that much if people keep on voting for the two main parties - both of them take equal amounts of money from the same special interests. Just look at what happened to the Energy Bills in the Senate.

We would have plug-in electric autos and solar panels (on every house!) and wind-energy generators and sea wave energy generators and happy baby seals by now if we had voted the Green Party in a decade ago. You think we are going to have any of those things with the Demopublicans? Nope. Sadly, nope.

Is is just me or does the whole thing seem like a "production" ?
Wag the dog, but the whole Congress is in on it.
The thought that an election could be thrown (a stacked supreme court - nothing new ).
What happened to underdog Ralph Nader ? In /out/ in ?
It seems the Dems can't do much except rollover. Could it be this is a contest to see who can maintain the staus quo ?
There's enough $$$ for everybody.
I don't think people have the energy (or cynical paranoia ) to do the resarch, compare the arguments from both sides and let the ideas roll around inside their heads before rejecting or incorporating something into their value systems.
I think people find it easier to just jump on the old 'hamster wheel'.
I mean it's all set up for you - "all you have to do is hit the ground running ! "
Somebody tells you what to do and think & you can go through the motions until it's time to retire (spin the big wheel, see what you've won !).
I hope enough boomers will get a perspective on just what the net
result was of all those years punching a clock .
What if you find that out of your 2 person income, one of the paychecks was to pay for 'extras' ?? (I'm sorry. shoulda said vital to maintaining your lifestyle ).....
Childcare, cable television, restaurant food,
income taxes (higher bracket ), interest on new cars
(not to mention what it costs you to run an auto in Cal. or N.Y. ),
credit card interest AND penalties - the result of impulse spending , and a storage unit to put all the other crap that you thought you had to have?

But you did your job: you consumed, that's what it's all about.

sorry. don't mean to be an anarchist. What has affected me most are George Carlin's latest routines where he says this country was bought and paid for long ago.
It feels like our Political system / Congress is a Bookie that takes money from both sides, pays off the winners and keeps the rest.
Secret budgets and payraises approved and passed at midnight ?
"Vote for my 'rider' and I'll vote for yours ! "
Just because you and your children pay for this country's 'budget', doesn't mean you need to know where that money really goes.
California's recall election didn't cost the political parties, the taxpayers paid for that one. Lots of our money because one side thinks they can run the ' front office' better than the other.
To watch the dems and pubs on tv is like watching a Hollywood couple feud, you know they're BOTH phonies.

Hi

Yeah there is a little of the anarchist in me too.

However Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, minimum wage laws , child labor laws, public works organizations (CCC, WPA), Tennessee Valley Authority, etc., public lands preservation, etc., all Progressive and 95% Democratic Party ideas and programs, along with many others. History is very compelling on this subject.

Then I think Supreme Court and health care and I firmly believe the political parties are different.

This does not excuse the Democrats from failing in their responsibilities now and I certainly know they are "corporate" too. that is the reality of today's world.

I'll take what I can get and hope for the best, ya know.

Thanks for your commentary!
