Caterpilla-Dog?

Caterpilla-Dog?

I found this little critter outside the other day and took it inside to photograph, and what a bizarre little creature it turned out to be. It's appears to be a cross between a caterpillar and a slug. But it's face clearly looks like a dog and it's feet are so small it appear to not have any. It even has whiskers on it's face! As you can see, it's super tiny. That's real size.

I didn't touch it with my bare hands incase it was poisonous, as I've heard animals, insects, frogs etc that are black & yellow, you should avoid contact, but my gardener made a fatal mistake, thinking it's harmless and he said it "shocked him" or stung him. Perhaps just pricked him - who knows - His English is not so hot. Anyhow, I didn't want to risk it.

Cute little fella - I shall call it "Caterpillar-Dog" or any other suggestions?

OK - so here is the technical names and details of this little fella:

these are indeed a species of Limacodidae, but I could not tell you which species it is. Judging by the size they are probably first or second instar caterpillars - there are usually 5 stages we call instars in the caterpillar's development. And yes the bright colours are warning or aposomatic colouration advertising the very painful sting that the hairs can deliver. So I would not handle it!
