Beaches

Beaches by TomLA.
When we were on our California vacation we visited a few beaches along the coast from San Francisco down to San Diego. Sue, evidently, had decided to take a small collection of sand and rocks from the various beaches. After we got home she put the sand from each beach in a little glass bottle. There are 3 more bottles not shown here. The rocks were to go in the various aquariums.

When we packed our bags to leave California we had bags of sand and bags of rocks inside. I weighed the 2 checked bags. One was slightly overweight. The other was slightly underweight. I was able to adjust contents to get each bag just slightly underweight.

When we checked in at the airport the gal at the counter noticed that the bags were kind of heavy. She said, “Have you got books in there.”

I said, “No, it’s rocks.”

She looked at me kind of funny and said, “What, you don’t have rocks in Illinois?”

This is simple and elegant. One thing that I haven't been able to do yet is find a place in my house where I can control the light to any degree.

Is this taken inside a bathtub?

What a lovely conceptual shot! And I love the story behind it. I am a notorious rock collector, so I can identify.

Kris: This was taken in the living room. I clamped a piece of thin white poster board to the piano bench and bent it up against the piano. I would have preferred to use sunlight, but that was not possible today. So I placed the strobe far enough away to get a decent shadow. I can now trigger the strobe like a flash through a wireless device mounted on the camera. Most of the light is from the strobe. I closed the living room curtains.

Liz: I have to admit that I, too, brought home a few small rocks of my own, but mine were in my carry on.

Some of the sand on Ocean Beach in San Francisco is magnetic, the kids went to nursery school just over the road from the beach, and we used to play with magnets and trays full of the black sand.

Rachel: That’s interesting. I just took a magnet to the bottles of sand and all of them, except for the La Jolla sand, which is the furthest south of the group, have pieces that are black and attracted to a magnet.
