I feel that over the last few years I have learnt sufficiently enough about photography to know when I am pleased with work that I produce, to be able to recognise strengths and weaknesses and humbly concede there is so much more knowledge for me to acquire.
It is my belief that in the infantile stages of an artist's development it is easy to get caught up in the technicality of your medium, striving to achieve a type of 'forced' perfection, invoked upon by highly crafted precedents.
I often speak of the propensity I have to achieve a certain feeling or evocation of mood, prior to shooting and quite often what is in the mind's eye and what is achieved are two distinctly separate things.
I have dedicated my old EOS 20D and a 50mm 1.4 which has stopped auto focusing to be a kind of sacrificial go anywhere camera. My camera and I were completely saturated in the time it took to take this shot. Being forced to manually focus the shot in a very quick moment whilst composing the woman where I wanted, left a certain inability to pin point the focus on said 'woman in red' but it is my self critique that the abscence of sharpness on the subject matter here allows the viewer to experience the entire scene as exactly that. There is no hieracrhy of importance within the composition and the entire image allows itself to be almost theatrical in nature. The inability of having complete control of the technical aids I am readily used to, such as something as simple as auto-focus has allowed for a serendipitous outcome, and resulted in one of my favorite photos...
