I meant to comment on this yesterday and got distracted. Another BRILLIANT shot here, Tom, and congrats on your explore. SO good to see you back in there as I had assumed you had been banished for life for having too many explores. Incredible job on this!

For the most part, I think I have been. I used to make Explore almost every day, and I could pretty much make it at will if I added my photo to the right groups and posted a complimentary photo that day that wasn't as good. That all stopped around last February. Since then, I've only made it a handful of times. I realize it's only a computer doing the picking, so it really isn't indicative of a good photo (a lot of crap makes it), but I still miss it because of the level of exposure Explore gives shots that's not otherwise possible.

I agree. Explore is silly. It has nothing to do with a photo being great or anything. It's more of a measurement of how well you play the flickr "game". The automatic algorithm is always changing to make it harder for people to work the system. But lately it seems like more of a lottery or a rotation where those who get in are in for a week or so and then eventually spit out without any more luck for a while. I once thought it was based on comment/favorite performance, but as the height of my latest string of explores showed, it didn't matter how they performed once I was "in". After a full week of getting in no matter what, BAM it stopped. I'm back on the bench.

Explore is silly, and I really wish people wouldn't care so much. It is true that Explore offers exposure that is otherwise impossible on Flickr. But the added exposure is almost as meaningless as explore itself. I mean, all you get is random comments from people who are only leaving comments in hopes that it brings you to their photos so that you can leave comments. Or you get lots of glittery graphics! YAY! Oh and the best is, now you have people that set up apps to automatically leave comments on every photo in explore that day. Here's one of my favorites from my latest explore spree...

"Congratulations on Explore photos. You have a great job. Please visit the flickr
me. I am glad we are friends"

      Ha...what a joke.

You make some excellent points, especially that more comments/favorites are pretty meaningless, too. I'd like to think the more "interesting" my photos are considered, that something positive will eventually become of that (sort of like my favorite South Park line: 1) collect underpants, 2) ?, 3) profit!; I guess it would go something like this: 1) increase photos' interestingness, 2) ?, 3) profit!). What, I'm not really sure.

To be fair to that random commenter, you do have a great job! That comment reminds me of the auto-eBay messages I get from Hong Kong sellers when I order photo items from them.

I was just there last week. I would give anything to be back there then here in Chicago.
