Mobutu & Baudouin pagne

    Newer Older

Commemorating the November 1969 visit of Republic of the Congo (Léopoldville) president Joseph-Désiré Mobutu to Brussels, and the conferring of the Belgian Grand Cordon de l’ordre de Leopold upon the President. Mobutu is shown after a still from the 20 November ceremony in the royal palace, between King Baudouin I and Queen Fabiola of Belgium. Mobutu wears the sash and star of Belgium ’s highest decoration on, and the color scheme’s dark purple reflects the color of this order’s sash and rosette. The decoration mimics European baroque design wallpaper, picture frame, and wall mounted candelabra. The cloth has no selvage mark, and is a single sided “fancy” roller print. This piece runs to six full yards, along with remnants of red thread that would have bound the folded bolt of fabric and marked yards or meters. I’ve only seen this in pagnes from Congo/Zaire.
