Plowing snow without a plow

Plowing snow without a plow

I drive a Volkswagen bug. I drive every day on a National Scenic Byway, through a state forest, over a mountain. Fifty miles horizontally and half a mile vertically, each way. On this day, the snow was several inches deeper than the bottom of the car.

I would barrel down the road, and smash into the deep snow, blasting snow in all directions. The pile of snow in the photo is what resulted. I'd shovel the pile away, back up, and clobber it again. The parallel grooves in the snow are caused by the whole bottom of my car dragging through the snow. It took about two hours to get to the top of the hill shown.

Bambi on the way to work

Bambi on the way to work

I mean, *I* was on my way to work. I don't know where the deer was going.

Elk

Elk

These guys *were* in the middle of the road. But by the time I got the window open and the camera on, they were fifteen feet into the woods.

White-lined Sphinx Moth

White-lined Sphinx Moth

Not a hummingbird, but it looks a lot like one as it sips nectar. These guys are very hard to photograph, because they have thousands to flowers to choose from. You can't just hang out by the feeder.

I guess what I like about this photo are the wings. Notice they are sideways, not vertical. Think about the gymnastics needed to get those wings in that position. Amazing.
