These fishing boats hasn't been in use since a fish processing
company, Eyraroddi, went bankrupt leaving one third of the labour
force unemployed in Flateyri.
I spoke with a young Polish couple at the gas station (both 16 years old). Their parents came to Flateyri few years ago when there was still plenty of work. They bought house at that time. Then the recession came. They lost their jobs. Property prices fell down. They can't sell their house and go back to Poland as they would loose a lot of money. Icelanders don't like them as they are taking the available jobs (the girl was actually working at the petrol station) and they don't feel like integrating with them anyway. There is literally nothing to do for young people in this village, making them feel miserable, depressed and trapped in this slowly dying place.
