Brilliant as always, Todd. And she certainly has nicer legs than Ben Folds!

Hey Woody! Ha, you've got that right. Though, since you mention Ben Folds, there were lots of similarities between the two shoots. Piano singers are tough!

Oh I hate you and your descent lighting! God forbid the guy at the House of blues turn up the fronts.. yet again :) I cant be too bitter because I have like a bajillion shots of her. I just want to go up to the guy and be like hi.. you need to light her at the piano too not just when she's playing guitar. Since I saw he used the fronts when she was on guitar.. just not when she was on the piano. They (not the) opted to backlight her at piano.

Haha yeah I shot her when she was in Sydney and really struggled with the whole stationary piano thing. I can't see any struggle in your photos though, this is an awesome shot! I love the expression you've captured as well as the great lighting, like sxyblkmn I love the pink glow :)

Hey all, thanks very much for the comments!

Rachel: I was actually surprised. This image does look a little brighter than the actual scene appeared, but I think I was shooting at ISO 3200 at f/2.8 and 1/160 with the 70-200/2.8. This was as bright as it got.

This pink/magenta backlighting only came up during the second song – the first was much more plain with regard to lighting, so this was a boon!

great shot. the pink glistening off her face and hair is awesome.

@ rachel & todd:
i feel like there is a constant 'invisible' struggle in this industry between lighting designers & photographers. sure, a lighting designers job is to provide band lighting, but there are no requirements and a lot of times it's more creative and moody than it is 'bright.' you can never guarantee they will give the stage enough lighting to take a sharp photograph.

i saw massive attack in berkeley, CA a few years back and it was a photographers nightmare. the band wanted no front light on any of the musicians. the lighting was through the fog on the floor, with mild backlight. instances like that are discouraging. luckily, that's an extreme, but in your instance todd, a little less lighting or darker colored lighting gels would have required you to shoot with a slower shutter speed and you may not have gotten this shot. disappointing...

luckily, i'm primarily an audio engineer. photographers don't have as many bones to pick with us, unless they forget their earplugs in the pit ;-P
