Cobra Starship @ Pop's -- 2008.10.18

Cobra Starship @ Pop's -- 2008.10.18 by Todd | ishootshows.com.
This shot actually includes the members of Cobra Starship – and one if their techs –- in a serendipitous full-band snap. Another second or two either way and we might have missed Ryland.

This is the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 somewhere around 14mm at 15mm, with speedlights camera right and left.

This image should be running in an upcoming issue of Alternative Press with a profile of Cobra Starship.

Visit www.ishootshows.com for the full gallery and write-up, complete with shooting notes.

Thanks for your comment. No HDR here, just some flashes and flare. :)

Somewhere around 14mm, do those fractions make a difference?
Pretty fantastic lineup shot - those moving lights look awesome. For a gig photographer, you sure know how to use your flash on the rare occasion that you're allowed ;)

Thanks! With ultra-wide lenses, a few millimeters does make a difference.

I just checked this and it was shot at 15mm.

I'm still learning flash, believe me. But thanks very much for the kind words! It's hard to practice with shows like this because of the rarity of the allowance, but I've found flash to be a great asset so far.

Flash is the new 'available light' isn't it? :D

My favourites over the past few days have been strobe-driven and this is definitely one of those.

Wow...amazing photo! I've always imagined that Pop's would be quite a challenge for live venue shooting, but you've definitely got it mastered!

soulcatcher: Ha, flash is always available ;) Thanks!

Jane: Thanks for the feedback. Pop's is actually kind of awful for photography, but being able to set up flashes definitely helps! I should have two more gigs there tomorrow as well.

Hey Julia! I didn't realize everyone was in the frame until I was looking at the shots on my computer. I have a few other shots of a few seconds before and after, and Ryland is missing, or you can't see the drummer, etc.

Anyway, glad it all worked out, since it should be a cool feature on the band! I have heard through a friend that Gabe thinks it's cool, haha. :)

Another winner.
So, the bands don't mind you setting up flashes to use during the show? Some tech guy isn't worried they'll mess up their lighting scheme or something?

Tasha: Thanks very much, glad to hear you like it. AP is going to have me as a new customer for this one. I have to wonder how it will be laid out, I think it is going to be half-page.

Corey: Thanks, this was a bit of luck! But I'll take it. ;)

Peter: I had permission from the band to use flash during this show. I didn't get yelled at or get the evil eye from any of the lighting techs as far as I k now. All the crew and management were incredibly nice.
