Here's one of Slipknot frontman #8, AKA Corey Taylor, photographed at Mayhem Fest.
Mayhem Fest: Slipknot!

Even though I don't listen to this type of music, this festival was a blast to photograph. I think I lost a 4gb Sandisk Extreme IV card somewhere at the amphitheater (it was blank), but I can't feel too bad with the haul of images I made.

I give Mayhem Festival two thumbs up.

Thanks, James! I was doing a really quick pull for the deliverables (must have next-morning turn around), and this one spoke to me. :)

Mary: Definitely super creepy. I really highly recommend Mayhem, and I don't even listen to metal! Just super great ops for images, especially everyone on the main stage.

My favs were DragonForce and Mastodon.

Thanks, Tasha. These guys are creepy! Not only the masks, but other details as well. Like this guy had grease paint on underneath the mask, on his neck, and also hands.

The lighting for Slipknot was pretty interesting overall, more atmospheric than some of than some of the other bands with a lot of color washes.

I thought Slipknot put on a great show, and even though I don't listen to them, I enjoyed their set. They even played a few tracks from the new album that's coming out.

I'd heard that these were new masks, so now I'll have to check out what their old ones looked like.

I think Corey Taylor's mask here was my favorite, though the drummer also had on a freaky one.

Actually, now that I see the Chicago date falls on a weekend, I'm half considering going up to photograph that. Geez, metal!

I'm slowly growing VERY away from metal music ( www.last.fm/user/PaRaGaS ), but I still do listen to old-school black, thrash and deathmetal at times.

Ha, metal is not really something I listen to, so I will leave all musical debates to you guys. :)

Still, I did enjoy the photographing the performance. I actually left about halfway through, but in hindsight I do wish I'd stayed longer.

Awesome photo Todd, how was it shooting Slipknot? I imagine you didnt have to worry as much about catching a expression on their face (as their wearing masks) and its more about getting hand movements?

Hopefully they'll come to Ireland on their new tour, id love the oportunity to shoot them!

Ramsey: Thanks! I thought Slipknot made great subjects. You're right, I didn't have to worry about specific facial expressions as much, the shoot was much more about posture and body language overall. That said, I didn't find it that much different than an unmasked band. Most of the considerations were the same.

I see they have some European dates, hope they make it over to you!

You know, I shot a few of the drummer, but he was pretty well hidden by his kit. It's definitely another experience photographing a band with so many members.

Great shot! Did you get bombarded by the smoke when they first came on like we did? Couldn't see a dang thing. I had such a problem getting any shots of the guys in the back because the stage here was so high - and I'm only 5'4" lol

But still, even though like you most of these bands aren't my cup of tea it was a great gig to shoot. :)

btw, slipknot is really one of my favourite hardcore metal band and u photographed them well! however i dont really like corey's new mask..i like his old mask where he looked like some creature from hell..and the torn jaw made the mask sooo alive :)
