Mackenzie Country Sunset

I've had this one sitting around since my New Zealand trip in 2007, waiting for the right mood to strike me -- or possibly for me to run out of other shots to post. Either way, it's here now!

I caught this fantastic golden sunset from the side of Mount John, above Lake Tekapo. I'd spent most of the day driving from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo. One of the best things about New Zealand is the sheer diversity of landscapes. The Canterbury region east of Mackenzie Country was low, sandy, and flat. It actually kind of reminded me of southern New Jersey -- that might have just been due to the number of berry farms by the side of the roads. The transition from the Canterbury region to Mackenzie Country was astonishing. I'd been in the rain and fog on and off all day, then I went through Burkes Pass and the rain stopped, the clouds disappeared, and the wind kicked up. East of the pass, things had been fairly lush, but now it looked like the Central Valley in California -- dry and dusty. Of all the places I've been, New Zealand is the one I'd most like to return to. Anyone want to buy me a plane ticket?

It never hurts to view a shot large and on black.
