The dedfender might gain my vote with a larger version. The general effect seems nice, but I can't appricate details.
Here, I like your angle, the really thin line of sky, the B&W density, and the diagonal surf, which is conter balanced with the curved wave. The general effects make the guy looks very small and gives the shot mood to me. So,

a really tough decision - great challenge! i like both and can't see any technical flaws. (maybe you could try to crop the horizon, but it isn't too distracting as it is)
they are speaking very different languages: the calm vs. the action :) i could imaging that your picture was more difficult to get, but after all it is the result what counts.
this time it will be just a decision of my actual mood - sorry for the defender!

Both photos are very good, perfectly captured, well framed.
Challander's photo is very well done capture of dynamic surfer in action, but defender apart of equal technical aspects has unbeateble mood - there is a long journey to far places in front of him, and that's something we all dream about - unbelivable mood and just perfect
