I have talked to Kevin and he has told me the real story of getting
shot in the iPod.
The Armor stopped the bullet. Kevin didn't know he was shot. The iPod was how he found out.

Photos sent to me by my friend Danny with this caption:
My wife’s uncle works in a military hospital and told me about this. Its pretty amazing. Kevin Garrad (3rd Infantry Division) was on a street patrol in Iraq (Tikrit I believe) and as he rounded the corner of a building an armed (AK-47) insurgent came from the other side.
The two of them were within just a few feet of each other when they opened fire. The insurgent was killed and Kevin was hit in the left chest where his IPod was in his jacket pocket. It slowed the bullet down enough that it did not completely penetrate his body armor. Fortunately, Kevin suffered no wound.
I thought it was a great story so I posted them here.
UPDATE 04.05.07:
I just got an email via flickr from an engineer at Apple. He showed
the photos around the office and want to help get the guy a new iPod.
So it's looking good that it will be replaced.

I call BS on this one. Obv the sneaky soldier broke his ipod and then shot a bullet through it so that he can get a replacement. What a tool!

Ipod factory workers who inevitably might end up in the military should steal a bunch of the metal plates and use them as armor , just one question about the pic , why is there an Hp logo on the ipod?

funny, america was wise then like europe is wise today. anti war to the max. and well you see what it cost in the end. and despite the loss in lives and resources many in europe remain ingrates. still complaining about the british loan? 2% interest over 50 years with much of the resources charged at 10 cents on the dollar? then you siphoned even more money from the marshall plan and most costly of all the blood of countless american lives never mind the wounded which were spent to free you from the messes you made. and now ingrates like you complain we weren't generous enough. give me a break.

wrong. the reason was the peace movement. in fact its eery how most of their arguments are basically repeated word for word today as they were then to justify staying out of europes wars. and who could blame them. wise europe has already screwed up the world and cost countless american lives once. now they were going for a second go?
