Grandmother in Belmont, c1943 and 2013

Grandmother in Belmont, c1943 and 2013

Earlier this week I was in Boston on business and took the modern half of the blended photo.

Last week I suddenly realized that ancestry.com must have my grandparents listed in Boston-area city directories. I also realized that the photo of the Belmont library in deep snow must not be far from their rented house. Sure enough, I found them listed at 139 Fairview Avenue in the Belmont directory.

My grandmother, pictured here with their dog, passed away last month.

I scanned the photo a year or two ago, one of thousands of slides of my grandfather that I have scanned. I don't know how many are left. Now there are boxes more and prints waiting to be addressed.

My grandfather died when I was in high school.

They lived in Boston from about '42 to '46 while my grandfather worked at the MIT RadLab during WW2. They also got a kitten. My uncle spent his first months here.

East on Pike, Seattle, c1950

East on Pike, Seattle, c1950

The postcard erroneously says that it's looking east on Pine. This is Pike Street.

On the right, the Pay'n Save drugstore was purchased from Pay Less in 1947. Until the recent remodel of the Joshua Green Building this was still a Rite Aid, descendent through acquisitions.

The clock is Carroll's Fine Jewelry, surprisingly painted red. Up the block is the Ben Bridge clock, decked out with the steel and neon that saw it through the 30s.

Check out more of my clock photos. And more of my random acquisitions.
