sorry to hear of all of this
In fact I just saw the story on out local
TV news
so sad..
I've come back to further express sadness
So sorry that things like this happen
From what i am hearing on the news it
really wasn't this beauty's fault but some
bullying by humans that provoked her
totally bummed at the loss

Just heard the news. Searched for pix, and
yours came up.
So tragic, all around.
Tatiana was certainly beautiful. And from
your shots of her, looks like she liked you a
lot.
Her face seems to be saying that she
understood what you understand.
What a loss.
She also must have been very angry with the
people she attacked.
Wonder what happened?
Thank you for sharing.
Your photo's are beautiful.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I am very
sad over her death since she was on the most
part a very friendly tiger.
Gini: The moat is pretty big and I am
still trying to figure out how she could of
jumped or even climbed the walls to get out
but the only thing I can think of is there is
a big tree branch they keep in the yard that
sits right at the edge of the moat and if in
any way they moved it out further she might
of used it to jump farther across the moat.

Oh! Tragically indeed!!! So tragically and so
sad.... I'm also very sad because it was
Tatiana, and I am sadder because he was also
killed!!! A tragically event for everybody!!!
We often forget that they are fierce
creatures, and finally they only follow their
instinct. It is still sadder because it
happened the Christmas day! I am so sorry...
I imagine what you must feel! And the family
of the visitors also... An unforgettable
Christmas day, and another incomprehensible
accident (like all the accidents: unjust and
stupid...) Rest in peace!!!

Oh no - that's so sad!!
I am so sorry because of the visitors dead
and the dead of Tatiana!
Of course, I will never understand, why
people kill the animal, which got out of the
"prison" and kill somebody!
No question - it is of course
tragically!!!!
But that's the nature-world the animals are
living in! It is their instinct! They never
kill somebody because they are bad or
something like this!
Probably, it was a mistake of the zoo that
it was possible for Tatiana to get out of her
enclosure!
Very sad regards,
Babette
P.S. Your pictures are so beautiful!!!

I also saw this on the news yesterday and
immediately checked our flickr......to know
that someone MUST have photographs of this
beautiful tiger. I found YOU.
I guess it was one year ago that she
attacked a trainer......but look how you say
she was with you. Hopefully she just wasn't
eyeing you as her next meal....I am not being
cruel.....I am being honest.
My heart aches for the families who thought
they were going to the zoo for a nice family
outing and ended up losing a family member
with others being badly injured.......who
would have thought ??
My heart also aches for this beautiful
creature, who now rests in peace. Tatiana
was so beautiful and "due" to your
wonderful photography......she will live on
forever.
This is a sad time for you, in
particularly.........because you cared about
her personally, visited her regularly and
became her own personal photographer.
I am so sorry for all involved......my
heart aches for your loss and now void. She
was indeed a beautiful creature. You wonder
what went wrong ?

I'm going to miss Tatiana. She was so playful

were three human victims, Tatiana was also a
victim of involuntary service - she lived at
a zoo. If she had more human contact and more
enrichment, this may not have ended so
tragically

this is such a terrible event. I am sad for
the tiger population. It is sad that one
person lost his life and two others were
wounded. She did what tigers do - even our
small domestic cats have the instinct to
hunt/kill. I hope we can learn how she got
out and what other events may have happened.
I am not saying this is case here, but 98%
when there is a issue with an animal, be it
dog, cat, tiger and etc, it is due to human
intervention, such as poor treatment of said
animal or just plain bad judgment.
A tragedy all the way around.

Sad news indeed. I hope they find out what
initiated this tragedy. Wild cats are
exceptionally dangerous. Society suffers from
a bit of hubris to think that we can control
or tame the natural world. Sadly these events
remind us of our place in nature. My thoughts
go out to those iinjured and of course
Tatiana who was merely doing what she's
genetically programmed to do.

This is so tragic, for the families, for the
tiger and for the zoo. It's too bad zoos
aren't more prepared with tranquilzing guns,
since you can't blame a wild animal for
acting wild. My favorite animals at my local

something happen to them.

It's so sad - and even more egregious is the

responsible for opening the door on some kind
of prank or dare.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments for
Tatiana and for the Families affected by this
tragic event. Every thing I have read has
said she escaped by either jumping the (dry)
moat or climbing out of it but honestly I can
not see her climbing it but jumping it I can
see if she was taunted like the news is now
starting to come out and say cause if she got
enough adrenaline pumping do to someone
throwing stuff at her she most likely could
jump pretty far since she was known to be a
good jumper. I saw news reports online from
the Good Morning America show this morning
and Jack Hanna was talking about how athletes
can be pretty good jumpers when adrenaline
pumping so she could of done the same thing
even though it was 15ft across and about 20ft
down.

I don't understand why they couldn't just
tranquilize Tatiana and keep her someplace
until they figured out how she got out.
It's not like she decided all of a sudden
to get out and go kill somebody. She's a wild
predator, doing what predators do when given
the opportunity.
Humans are so good at killing and have been
good at it for as long as human behavior has
been recorded. But we do it for the wrong
reasons most of the time.
This whole incident makes me so sad.
Why kill the tiger and get all worked up
about all this when this tragedy was so
extraordinarily rare? Look how many people
die from drunk drivers, car accidents,
shootings, drug overdoses, etc., etc. I am
just amazed at how stupid people are
sometimes.
Tatiana was just being a tiger.
I am so sorry also for the young man and
his family for his loss. He was definitely in
the wrong place at the wrong time. It was
real bad luck on his part and that of his
friends. It could have happened to anyone
there that day. His number was up.
But Tatiana's shouldn't have been.
Sorry for the rant, but the more I've heard
on the news about this, the more angry I get
that we always go after the animal as though
they are out of control murderers.
They are not. They are wild animals just
doing what wild animals do. And if we are
going to put them into our environment under
completely abnormal conditions for the
animal, then we'd better be prepared to
suffer the consequences and it should not
include killing the animal.

First: It's all very-very sad and unfortunate
with what happened in the death and severe
injury of the others...
But I agree with BarnYard-Babe... why no
tranq' guns? I mean, that's what they use to
capture them in the wild, right?
But in the domestic jungle of San
Francisco, land of high tech modernism, we
shoot them with conventional guns.
Just doesn't make sense....

I don't know what happened. I don't know how
she got out.
Tatiana was just being a tiger
However the police had no choice but to
shoot. From what I have been seeing the 2
survivors ran away from her. She chased them
and her prey drive was up. What you have to
understand is:
First - PD does not carry tranq guns- A vet
or possibly an animal control officer would
have to be right there with the correct
dosage loaded in the dart gun.
Second - It can take up to 10 minutes for
the tranq to work.
Third - being hit by a dart would have
pissed her off.
She was standing over the two injured
people.
That is the unfortunate reality of the
situation.
Rest in peace Tatiana - you were admired
and loved.

From your photos, it is clear you had a
special place in your heart for Tatiana. I'm
sorry this world has lost another magnificent
big cat because of human mistakes. This is
truly a tragic loss for a species that has
suffered so much at the hands of human
beings.
While I feel also feel sorry for the family
of the person who was killed, this sort of
thing should have never happened.
Alas, we are responsible for putting these
amazing animals in zoos and in a situation
where they need to be in zoos to be
"saved."
I often wonder if incidents like this are
what they call karma. Either way, in the end,
it is the animal that suffers for our
actions.
Rest in peace, Tatiana...

6,500,000,000 selfish, arrogant, ignorant,

~2,000 tigers in the wild - ~17,000 tigers

when I read your post in Voices of the
Wilderness about Tatiana and then checked the
news report, being a zoo volunteer for over
10 yrs, I am sad to say the first thing that
came to mind was someone taunting the
tiger....... Tigers just dont jump moats and
attack to kill. I've seen a LOT of stupid
human actions over my 10 yrs, not only at our
soon, but while visiting other zoos across
the country. We lost a wolf a few years back
because a visitor decided to cross a barrier
and stick her arm thru the fence to
"pet" the wolf.
I agree that a tranquilizer gun would have
taken too long to bring down a 350lb tiger
and may have caused more injuries to innocent
bystanders. This is such a waste because of
human actions once again - I doubt if we will
ever learn.........
Rest in Peace, Tatiana - You are the
innocent victim.......

What a wonderful tribute to such a
magnificent animal. I am sorry for the loved
ones left behind in this tragedy. I hate that
anyone has lasting scars from this. All this
said I feel sad for the tigar. She was just
doing what a tigar does when being
threatened. People should take their children
to a zoo when they are young and teach them
that these are wild animals not to be taunted
or teased like I was. Like I taught my
children. Like I hope my children will teach
their children. I was taught to respect the
animals. It is so nice that zoos give us a
place to see animals, in a wild like setting
not in cages like when I was a child. It is
so much more humain. I know it is not the
ideal situation for the animals but, it is
nice for thoses of us who can't travel to the
animals and see them in their wild settings.
I do enjoy doing just that.
I am a truck driver and have had the
priviledge to see alligators, bald eagles,
falcons, fox, deer and coyotes in the wild it
is great, it gives me chills.
It is sad these boys were suppose to be
into music why weren't they somewhere making
music instead of taughting animals. This is a
good add for don't do drugs. Go out, get
high, drink, tease animals, you may just get
hurt by said animals.
To you thank you so much for bringing us
these wonderful pictures of this magnifacent
animal. I know you will miss her.

It's very sad. It wasn't Tatiana's fault,
and I'm very upset that she was killed.
