Hula Kai - Manta Rays

Night Manta Ray snorkeling with Fair Wind on the Hula Kai.

When you are snorkeling with the Manta Rays you hold onto a flotation device with up to 40 other people which have lights attached to them to draw the plankton to the lights for the Manta Rays to eat. You are not allowed to reach out and touch the Manta Rays but they can swim up to you and touch you which is a neat experience. Manta Rays can get up to 20 feet across but most of the Manta Rays we saw was 6 to 10 feet across. On most Manta Ray snorkeling trips the Hula Kai will see 2 or 3 Manta Rays but on our trip we saw up to 7 different Manta Rays.

I recently got back from Hawaii and this was one of the videos I took on my trip. We went to the big Island for a week in August since I will be heading back to school for a degree in Zoology starting September. I am actually not on Flickr that much anymore so if you would like to see more of my videos you can find me on youtube: www.youtube.com/thecatsjungle or you can keep in touch with me through my facebook account: www.facebook.com/Susan.Pettitt.Photography which is also the main location I upload my photos to these days.

A Friend noticed yesterday while we observed the new male mandrill at the SF Zoo he has a red heart on his butt so I took a picture plus I thought it would be a great addition to the animal butt group :P
