Here is a view of Los Angeles with what was a very dangerous thunderstorm for all aircraft in the sky. It had been generating lightning bolts from the time I took off in the helicopter, some of which had struck homes in the valley near the mountains. It had been quite windy and there was significant turbulence as we tried to circle downtown LA. The pilots were complete professionals and we all agreed that the flight over the city would have to be curtailed for the sake of our own safety. I’m a complete advocate of prolonging one’s life in potentially dangerous scenarios, so we landed shortly after taking off.
(Yes, I was given a discount, but that was not the point, clearly -- especially when one doesn’t live in the area).
The odd aspect was that just an hour or two previously, the sky had been clear with the sun bursting with radiance. As a result, I was content with the few dramatic scenes I managed to photograph as the sun set and the angry, menacing storm clouds amassed over the City of Angels. Enjoy.
