LG VX5500

This is not from a camera flash, the screen is just lights up solid white for no reason. I wonder why the battery life is not as good as advertised.
Been going through them so fast I stopped taking off the plastic-y phone condom things.
LG VX5500 by Thruhike98.
A nice, simple, buggy, possessed-by-demons cellphone.

This is the first LG cellphone I've had that was buggy. On the plus side, at least they are consistently buggy - all five (or six? I lost count.) of them I've tried. Many did this strange spontaneous-screen-lighting-up thing, which could be the cause of the lower-than-advertised battery life. All of them have had their calendar possessed by demons. My review, and how to recreate the calendar weirdness, is here.

Update, 23 Apr '09: I took my phone to Verizon today and they gave me a new one that was a different model. They said after you have trouble with a certain model several times, they will give you something else. I got a VX8360, which is much nicer, because they didn't have any on the same tier as my old one.

I highly recommend the Verizon Wireless store on F Street in D.C. They have been super helpful and pleasant to work with.

Finiky: You're right. I like to not think about my phone, and just know it'll work when I want it to. That's why I get the smallest, plainest LGs I can get, which until now have had LG's (good) software, rather than Verizon's software.

I just remembered - while waiting for VZW to try to get my phone to cooperate, I was able to recreate that calendar weirdness on a demo LG VX5500, VX8360, and a VX9100 (enV2). Didn't see the the battery-wasting white screen though.

Larissa and I are having to choose new cell phones (being forced, almost at gunpoint!) and it all just seems too crazy. We don't mind the phones we now have, but we won't be able to continue using them in a few weeks. The wireless industry seems so wasteful.

Jon from Maine: Are you caught up in that Alltel/Verizon merger/takeover? It does seem like a pretty wasteful industry, mostly to give us new toys so we'll sign up for two more years. :|

We're caught up in some sort of merger! Service in Maine can be rather spotty, so we're going with Verizon's reputation for coverage. We'll know if we made a mistake!

I have had Verizon for years now, and love LG phones.. I have the Voyager as I am a mega-texter, Verizon does have amazing customer service as well as coverage.

you must be going thru the landline merger of Verizon and Fairpoint. I don't have a landline, but my co-worker is having so much problem with Fairpoint, he misses Verizon.

It's not the landline merger, it was Verizon taking over our wireless provider. Unfortunately for many, there are numerous complaints about Fairpoint. Amazingly enough, we have landline and internet service w/a "mom and pop" business in a town of about 3,000: When we had a few problems early on, we could actually make a phone call and talk w/a real person!
