What could be more exciting than going to live in the White House? Taking a puppy with you!
That was the best line of the night.

I read your piece, the history of slandering opponents is as long as the political history of your nation. But that it really had a negative effect on McCain's methods of campaigning gives me hope that just maybe we have evolved somewhat.

I am so happy, I still have goosebumps and tears of joy in my eyes.
Obama showed that he could remain calm during the nastiness that was thrown at him on the campaign trail, and I truly believe that he will have a bipartisan approach as he said in his speech.

I have to say that I am a bit concerned if they do get a Standard Poodle, I can only imagine what "breeders" will pop up all over trying to profit off the new Presidential puppy. I hope he rescues a mutt :)

It's a brand new day, and "Yes, we can"

Yes, I too am worried about the rash of impulse Standard Poodle buys if the first dog is a Spoo. Remember the 101 Dalmations fiasco? Taco bell Chihuahuas? It would be great if he would adopt a rescue, what great things that would do if the President supported Rescue!

Nice blog post. Agree with everyone in saying I hope they adopt a rescue/stray. It would set a nice example. As much as I am happy and relieved, also disappointed about Prop 8 in California, and the other anti-gay props that passed. I think it will change, however.

Love the blog - thank you for your common sense. It baffles me that, up to the very end, people were willing to believe the nonsense out there about President-elect Obama ("he's a terrorist/Marxist/radical/Muslim who won't produce his 'real' birth certificate" - huh?) but, then again, some of those same people also believe in crop circles. ;-(.

Did Prop 8 pass, I know it was close... that is truly disappointing. I just don't get it, I don't understand how it hurts others if two people get to marry.

Yes, looks like Prop 8 passed. Sad. We should have same rights, same responsibilities for everybody, that's American.

luvlymikimoto, you're in MSP, right? My friend there tells me if Coleman survives the recount, she thinks there will be a recall owing to his ethical lapses.

luvlymikimoto  Pro User  says:

I doubt there's the stomach for a recall unless someone can find a smoking gun somewhere. For now, I'll just hope like hell a recount will move Al's way. Coleman is a rotten human being - he cares about what he can get for himself, no matter what the issue. Years ago I had the grand misfortune of having to work with him on a single, stupid issue. He's a prick and a selfish jerk and puts the "stink" in the word carpetbagger. (Ooooooooom - gotta take my chill pill.) And I am mortified by California right now - enshrining discrimination into the state constitution is inexcusable.

Sorry, . Didn't mean to highjack your picture comments.

Hurray for Luma! When I ordered my yard signs, t-shirts etc. from the Obama online store, I was disappointed I never saw Obama dog collars -- otherwise, Petey would be wearing one right now. Obama showed that he's definitely cut out for the Presidency, now that he's worked "puppy" into his speeches :-)))

Last night I was leaving a conference at a downtown hotel about 8pm, and people were cheering in the lobby bar as if the Broncos were winning the SuperBowl. A hotel employee -- who happened to be a black guy named Mohammed -- asked me what the noise was about. I was so happy to say "Obama is gonna win!!" What a country :-)

Wait. Are you saying crop circles aren't real?

Yay -- another poodle for Obama. Definitely a feel-good photo.

I am so glad that the public took the tone of the campaign for what it was -- desperation. I am also hopeful that this election is historic not simply because we elected a black man, but that it marks a new era in American politics where we accept or reject a candidate on the basis of their ideas and vision for the country, not because of the latest sound bite/smear/pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Layla 'n Pip: Very well said! I hope that means the negative sound bite/smear/pandering will be abandoned as an ineffective technique. Not sure we can count on folks being smart enough to find better approaches, but I sure hope they do.

Little did Luma know how much dialog would be generated w/such a simple sign!

I share the sentiments expressed - we'd make a great support group, reinforcing one another's views!

I do worry that the smear tactics had a positive effect for the Republican party and, had the economy not tanked and someone at least remotely qualified for VP had been chosen, the outcome may have been different. Obama also managed to deflect the outrageous charges - I'm not quite sure how - and I think few people could pull that off. Look at the Swiftboat treatment that stuck on Kerry and how McCain himself was run out of the 2000 election. Those who didn't want to believe, didn't. Those who did, did. The vitriol in so many comments at the end of news articles are truly scary. Hopefully they reflect the feelings of a small (but certainly vocal) minority. I'm not sure. From what I understand, though, Obama himself was saying to relax and trust the American people. He was correct!

It was wonderful, refreshing to listen to Obama's acceptance speech last night and realize we had, once again, an articulate president. To paraphrase: Intelligent at last! Intelligent at last!

I just want to say that I really think it would be bad for any pure bred to be in the white house, that would lead to much popularity and then you know what happens. I think it should be a mutt from the local shelter. A trend that may set a much needed precedence. Just an opinion.

Woo, I'm late to this party! We've been overjoyed and exhausted since Tuesday night...following it all so closely, hoping hoping hoping hoping hoping hoping hoping hoping for change, and then -- YES!!!!

Prop 8 is really disappointing here in CA...I'm hoping (again) for repeal. It's only a matter of time. The Mormon church and the Catholic church were the two biggest funders of Prop 8. I guess they're not exactly going away, but the cultural shift is happening, people!

Teh gay, and teh atheists...two more hurdles to go. Maybe by 2108 our country will be civilized enough to be really inclusive. Our grandpoodles will see the day...

Glad to see sweet Luma here; I've missed the TH98 family!

I try to keep politics out of Dogs Hope flickr site, but of course I am thrilled by your post. We all need to work as hard as we can to help this man make a real difference. I'm as happy as I could be. Do hope he adopts a nice mixed breed dog for his family. I am realistic enough to realize that he has a lot on his plate, but like most things - if people work together, a lot can be accomplished.

When I wear a tie, it's almost exclusively a bow tie.
Not: I wear a bow tie almost all the time, or I wear only bow ties (and nothing else). :)
