You may remember me mentioning a 7-level treehouse while you were here. This is the place. We were headed there (to look for it) when we came across the Fallout art fest.

There have been quite a few petitions to have that torn down. There have been a few city council arguments about it if I'm not mistaken. This is about 10 minutes from my house!

Jessy, I would love for you to stay there as well (so long as I can climb up to visit you once in a while)! : D

anthony_thompson  Pro User  says:

Kristine, did you sign any of those petitions? What is your opinion of the place?

My position is that every city needs some whimsical places like this. Otherwise, the urban experience would be bland and boring. I'd rather petition to have McDonalds torn down. : )

hart0757: It's at 4800 Minnetonka Blvd., St. Louis Park. Just a couple of minutes drive from Lake Calhoun. And it's visible from the street.

anthony_thompson  Pro User  says:

I recall that the guy who built it (and still owns it and his house next door) told the newspapers that he had built it for his teenage son out of remorse that he hadn't spent enough time with him when he was younger. That's a 20 year old memory, though, so the warranty on it's accuracy has run out! : D

Yes, Susan, it's massive! 7 levels, if I recall correctly. And there are at least 3 small "cottages" on it!

Just Kristine says:

Nope, never signed one petition in favor of getting rid of it. Apparently people are arguing that it is another "residence" on the same piece of property, which of course is not allowed by city zoning laws. It's managed to stay because that it is in fact NOT another residence due to the lack of plumbing, and other features that would make it "habitable." I'm glad it's still standing, and coming from an architectural background I think it's fantastic! I get to drive by this every time I go to the dentist :) Reminds me of something out of Swiss Family Robinson.

openeyesinwa: Yes, it's carried quite a load (for over 21 years)! I notice that it's getting a little "help" lately with some props under the branches.

anthony_thompson  Pro User  says:

Hi Kristine,

Yes, someone commented above that they drive by a lot but never see anyone using it. The current owner of the adjacent home is the same guy who built it (mostly for the fun of it, I think).

You are certainly on-the-mark with your Swiss Family Robinson reference!
