Backlit Kapiti Island

Backlit Kapiti Island by tom.wright.
Finally the sun came out, although by now it was completely in the wrong place, so I had to settle for this back-lit view of New Zealand's Kapiti Island, a nature reserve where native birds thrive.

Gorgeous - you make me want to go back to NZ, haven't been to Kapiti in years.

Interesting shot. I really love the way that you composed this - it leads the eye around the photo by starting with the tree (maybe just a large branch?), then the piece of driftwood, and finally the shrouded island in the background. The beach seems completely deserted, like you discovered it or something. It has a great feel to it...

very cool shot, love how you included the branch into thie image... me not being that clever of a photographer would have walked past it haha. very nice composition and excellent work. The exposure is very nice and i love the details of the sky. the blue and the white clouds look soo pretty against each other and the dark ground looks like you're on some remote island.. the tone and mood is great. I think I would have tried a neutral density filter to mabye make it slightly more dramatic, but this is great already!

Nice to see the sky open up sometimes isn't it! Especially here! That tree looks right lonely standing there all by itself with hardly a branch.
The ONLY issue I have is I find it a bit dark on the bottom. Lightening during post production just a bit, without losing the effect of the shadows/silouette may prove to take this great shot to an AWESOME shot.

Well done otherwise!

Beautiful shot. I love how sharp the clouds are in the background. The bright color of the sky also pops creating a perfect silhouette of the tree branch. Really good composition. Simple yet eye-catching. Two thumbs up for you!

Great shot!

Beautiful sky, really like the photo. Only the post processing is not really at the crunch. The tree branch should be a bit "lighted and add brightness" to attract the foreground attention. And the beautiful background has been dramatic.

Thanks so much for all the comments. I'd already lifted the shadows quite a bit before posting this one (I had to under expose to keep detail in the clouds), so was wary of going overboard. Following the suggestions, I've re-processed it, as shown below. I'd be really interested in any further comments saying which version you prefer!
