Daniel

Earlier today while shooting street photography near the Powell Street cable car turn around I ran into Daniel. I'd positioned myself against a wall and was shooting people as they walked by. Daniel saw me shooting and put a newspaper in front of his face and got right in front of my lens. I took my eye off the viewfinder to talk to him. Daniel started into his pitch about how he was raising money for homeless programs.
He told me about his newspaper and asked me for a donation. I told Daniel about my $2 portrait project and he quickly agreed to pose. I asked him his name and he said Daniel, like Daniel in the lion's den.
Daniel was born locally here in San Francisco. He said he had been born in the Haight Ashbury district but that he'd lived all over the Bay Area, East Bay, Peninsula, the City. I asked Daniel how old he was and he said 46. He asked me how old I was and I said 41 to which he replied, "see I'm your big brother," and laughed.
While I was shooting Daniel he told me he had a great idea. I asked him what it was and he said, why don't we turn this $2 portrait into a $5 portrait. I smiled and told him that the project was only for $2. He was cool with that.
I asked Daniel if he travelled much. He said he did. He said he used to be in the military and travelled a lot then. He said he'd been all over the U.S. Oklahoma, back East. He said he liked traveling around everywhere because he loved everyone everywhere.
After a bit more conversation I wished Daniel well and we parted ways. Thank you brother he said.
