Self Portrait, August 24, 2005

drop this?
i agree
I totally disagree with dropping that. Are you guys kiddin? Why would you crop or cut that part? The lights makes the picture and is a great contrast to the silhouette. It also makes the artist seem more "towering" or taller, giving him a sense power as his hands are confidently in his pockets.
Nothing In This Image Should be dropped...This is a fantastic image
Self Portrait, August 24, 2005 by Thomas Hawk.
Foggy night tonight in San Francisco.

For those of you who would like to be part of a new critique group started today I would encourage you to check out

www.flickr.com/groups/deletemeuncensored/

All are welcome.

Edit, June 15 2009: after many years, the critique group mentioned above started on August 25, 2005 was unfortunately destroyed by a few rogue admins who did not believe in it's uncensored charter. The new reborn group can be found here.

I like this very much because of the fog and the framing. The dark lower right corner is a bit disturbing, but I can understand that you have to stand upon something. ;) Maybe you could crop it a bit, then it would be really perfect.

Okay the above comment was given before it was in the DeleteMe-Group. So unfortunately I have to vote DeleteMe. Sorry. (Some people will complain about you being too far on the right, but I like this.)

MarS919 I do not understand your problem with the person being to far to the right. All those "centric" pictures are boring.

I like this picture a whole lot. Esp. because of the fog over the city.

the pic and all the tech stuff is fine i think... i just think a portrait should say something about the person. if ur the godfather of some mafia family in SF or someone with suicidal tendencies i would would say it was a good portrait. b4 i vote either way how were you portraying urself and is it accurate?

Nice composition (I like the person on the right), good tonal, good idea.
Some possible improvements: if you facing the city would be better, crop a little bit the dark area on which you stand.

I like the composition, and don't mind the extra curve and highlight on the concrete. The wash monotone of the city just doesn't work for me. The fog hides what I like about night cityscapes - the variety and color. As always a good shot, you don't do crap, I just don't want to save this one.

I'm not disturbed by the sodium vapor haze (it's SF fog, after all), but I'm wondering why you (if that is you) decided to face the camera rather than look out over the city. But I have a much more important question: on what are you standing and just how far is the descent if you take one step to the right?

If you faced the lights i would feel i was looking out through your perspective, but you're facing the camera as if you own the city. Sometimes it looks like a toy doll was placed there in an awkard manner...also, your shirt looks like it's coming untucked. interesting though

OK, I've looked at your Twin Peaks stream. No, it's not a favorite, but it's the best of the series and would be better if you'd 1) gotten someone else to pose; 2) went for a complete silhouette (just a little too much detail in that figure); and 3) had your subject (in the last resort, you) turn around to gaze out over that wonderful view (more wonderful than the picture reveals, I'm afraid). As for "fatty in a suit" - GIVE ME A BREAK! I'll put down odds that the Flickr group is far from buff.
Oh yeah, gotta tell ya a fog story. I was living in London some year's ago when a "pea souper" came in. There was an eerie light all about, but the fastest medium I had to work with was Kodachrome 64. I used a flash. Result: polar bear in a snowstorm.
