Whispering Secrets I Know I'm Not Supposed to Hear

such smooth water
I like the bridge slightly out of focus, it makes it look more surreal

Nice!
Whispering Secrets I Know I'm Not Supposed to Hear by Thomas Hawk.
I had a lot of fun a few weeks back out at the Golden Gate Bridge doing a video interview about my photography with Marc Silber for his new photography series Mark Silber's Photo Show. We talk about my style, my equipment and what personally motivates me in photography. Thanks to Marc Silber for having me on his show and to Rocky Barbanica for doing a great job as usually filming and editing while out at Baker Beach at the Golden Gate Bridge. You can watch the video directly over at Marc's show here.

Sandisk is sponsoring Marc's new show and I think it's really great that they are willing to invest in social media this way. I've personally used Sandisk cards for many years and think they're great! You can follow Marc's blog here and his great new video series here.

I actually faved this picture before looking at the large size and I have to agree that it doesn't hold up in anything bigger than the default size above. I guess you must have shot dozens of frames (so where are the sharp ones) and I guess you simply had your autofocus slider on the lens turned off as at 24mm with f18 you wouldn't get that much blur on the bridge with focusing 1/3 into the frame.
Tell us Thomas, what happened?

yeah, the lack of focus is intentional. I've been playing around with lack of focus a lot more lately and expect to post a lot more of this sort of style in the future. I like the softer feel that lack of focus provides. Less of a focus on a subject and more a focus on color and form. I probably took at least 1,000 shots this past weekend out of focus in Chicago. Of course this style is not for everyone.

I wonder if it needs to be even more out-of-focus to look intentional? I guess most of us looked at the medium default, and, from there, it looks like the bridge is supposed to be in focus... then large, and wham - confusion. I'll be interested to see some of your other intentional out-of-focus shots, in any case.

I hear what you are saying with the out of focus thing, I've been looking into doing some similar things there, but I think that with such a defined subject like this you either need it to be sharp or further out of focus. I love the color of the water and clouds and the fiery bridge in the distance, and I even like the vignette here, but the bridge should be a hair sharper I think.

I agree with Manuel Jimenez and Jason R. The color combination is stunning, but for me the composition is what makes this (as Rachel Portele and Ines Poppe also agree) a great new classic image of a much photographed icon--soft blue-green sky & sea cushioning the jeweled bridge between like a pearl in an oyster.

Lived in the Bay area for 3 years, saw the bridge every day and every night from many angles and in many lights. However, I didn't think first oh, it's the Golden Gate Bridge. First thought, this is beautiful, then oh, it's the GGB.

Ref the focus, to me looks like the slightly blurred bridge complements the soft-edged clouds, sea, and darkened coastline.
