Pet Rooster

The craziest thing today. While running around downtown taking photos after work I went through the park that is next to Embarcadero Three and found a rooster running around loose. The guy seemed friendly enough so I assumed he was somebody's pet but no one around wanted to claim him. Instead of running from me when I'd get down low and try to get in his face to shoot him he'd come charging at me. I'd have to back off to get my shots. My shooting a loose rooster in a downtown park was a sight. As I left the park someone asked me could I believe that a rooster was running around wild downtown. I told him he should have seen the goat that was there earlier. Weird.

If you're missing a pet rooster he may be running around Embarcadero Three somewhere.

Wild look in his eye! Great shot, and funny "only in San Francisco" story..LOL

Well, we've seen these chicken shots over and over and personally i find the subject matter entirely uninteresting. The framing is good, lighting ok (bit too harsh though) but mmm...not something i would frame!

I KNEW I could count on Renta, damn near dropped his name in my comment, ala "Renta will find a cock joke here" but didn't ... dammit!

Hey you worked real hard to get this pic. You got right in there and a nice simple background. He looks cut out. I don't see that many pictures of roosters or like this that looks like an oil pastel piece of art.

thats a really colorful, tightly cropped cock. but it leaves a terrible after taste in my mouth.

to international visitors: in english cock is a vulgarism for penis. in the New World, the penis is thought to be very hilarious.

A rooster at embarcadero 3? (I just read the story, I hate to be moved by the story) You just KNOW that chicken was dinner by dark.

I thought we kicked out the rooster pictures early on. This one's no better.

very crisp, good lighting, good background. I totally dig it. Did you notice the way his beak doesn't quite match up and that little bit of grass? Excellent.

I am not suggesting you submit more cock shots to the pool, but it makes a change from delteting dogs. cats and butterflies.

Cropped to tight for me. From its beak back it seems to loose focus to fast. I ddon't like the fact that the focus seems best on the grass in its beak.

Now that those jerks are done with it, how does anyone get to keep a rooster as a pet in the city? Do you need a special permit or permission from the neighbours? In Portland we have a strict 3-hen rule.

Your story had me laughing really hard. My office is right there at One Maritime, I can't imagine such a sight.

It may have gotten loose from Chinatown, except I think the BOS passed an ordinance banning the sale of live fowl for slaughter a few years back. It was very controversial at the time, they were accused of being racist, but it did make the animal rights people happy.

Maybe he was an illegal chicken. Escaped contraband. A convict!

    Did he cross the road?

  27. Thomas Hawk (95 months ago | reply)

I never did see him cross the road. It would have been better of course had he actually been running around Embarcadero 3.

I'm pretty convinced he had to be somebody's pet because he seemed so friendly. Can't imagine with all the noise though a pet rooster would be easy to keep in San Francisco.

The other thing to consider is that I believe for Chinese New Year this year it is the year of the Rooster.

LOL. this is hilarious. All I get to see at Embarcadero 3 is.... nothing.

No, he was rather friendly actually.

Hmm... that might be McNugget! My friend 'n his buddy bought a rooster off of a homeless guy to save him from the perils of life on the streets. Long story short, they knew of the chickens at the Embarcadero so they took the rooster there knowing he'd be safe and named him McNugget.

  34. Mr.M.R. (92 months ago | reply)

I think that's McNugget too, but unfortunately I haven't seen either of our brown feathered friends for awhile and the grounds keeper said that someone has been taking the chickens.
