Kalymnos liegt nördlich von Kos und wird oft als die Insel der Schwammtaucher bezeichnet. Neben der Viehwirtschaft war das Schwammtauchen der Haupterwerb der Einwohner, noch heute werden pro Jahr rund 50 Tonnen Naturschwämme aus dem Meer ertaucht. Kalymnos hat die einzige Schwammfischerflotte Griechenlands. Die Blüte der Schwammtaucherei lag im 19. Jahrhundert.
