I don't know why I love those so much. They're so stupid!

That's a lot of change for a moving bike violation. Yikes.

Yes. We get charged the exact same price as a car which makes the same violation.

That ticket is an outrage!! I'm so sorry. Did they ask to see your drivers' license? How did they get your name?

If you don't provide your driver's license or ID and commit a traffic infraction they can detain you and take you in until your identity is established. Theoretically you could just give them your name, DOB SSN etc. if you didn't have your ID on you.

He ran my DL same as he would have a driver. They have been cracking down on cyclists' minor infractions in PDX as a response to increased cyclists' activism asking for crackdowns on drivers who commit [dangerous] infractions and some drivers' subsequent complaints that cyclists violate the rules too. There have been a number of people given these tickets on bikes recently by cops in cars who turn on all the lights, come on the PA system telling the bicyclist to pull over, etc. which seems very menacing when it comes up behind you when you're on a bike.
When he turned on his lights and pulled me over he told me he was ticketing me because they don't 'want us [cyclists] to get squished because they didn't see the other person coming.' Nice of him to look out for me-- though he was the closest car to me and he had to speed up and run the red to catch me.

It's a tough thing. I know in Minnesota (where I'm from) if you are on a bike (which I am a lot) you are subject to the rules of the road just like a car. You are the most exposed in many ways on a bike. You lose to cars if there is an accident (physically) and you lose to foot traffic if there is an accident (legally). It's a nasty situation. $242 is pretty steep either way. I'm glad your co-workers could find something to lighten the mood.

If it helps, I once outran bike cops on my bike to avoid the same ticket you got, so I am certainly no better. (CoryQ)
