Incident at the Airport (a Flip Mino HD test)

In order to view this Flickr video, you'll need to
install the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player.

After a day of using the Flip Mino HD, I like it for what it is. It's fuzzy, unsteady, and hard to compose with the tiny screen but, hey, the thing is really small. It also works seamlessly with the desktop. It's a slight improvement over a Nokia n95. I expect my next mobile phone / device will be able to match the Flip.

UPDATE: I have found two (more) serious drawbacks to this device. First, the field of view is quite narrow, especially for an HD aspect ratio. Translation: you have to stand pretty far back to get everything into frame. Second, the focus range is terrible (you can see it in the video above). Translation: you have to move away from your subject which takes away from what could be fairly intimate, close up use of the Flip Mino HD.

Note: if you do not need HD (to integrate into other HD footage, for example) and are posting online only I suggest saving $ and getting the standard def version, at least until the free video sites support HD in a meaningful way. If you have a digital camera that takes video, or something like an n95, there's no reason to get one of these at all.

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Flip MinoHD, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

One comment on your "review". When I first opened mine (Xmas present) my first thought was with the fixed focus lens, it would be like many cell phones where the problem is they field of view is too wide giving you ok close ups, but anything further away than 10 feet or so begins to look tiny and too far away. Basically my concerns were that it would be great for a few feet away at home, but nearly useless outside or for shots requiring a longer distance.

Well I was pleased to find that the focus is set the way it is. While it is a sort of a PITA when you are trying to video your baby playing in the room, since you have to back up enough to capture everything you want, typically it is easier to back up from your subject that is too close than it is to get closer to a far away subject (e.g. I can't step closer to the gorilla at the zoo but I can put a few more feet between me and my kids).

Just thought I would throw out that alternative way to look at the range of the lens.

Have fun with yours! And join our MinoHD group!
