JULIA: Oh how cool, a telephone nook! You MUST get an old one to go in it. You can often find re-built phones on eBay...this is a good place to start, to figure out what kind you want:

Love love love these phones! Perhaps you should get yourself a dedicated phone table RDD.

When I was a kid, I had a friend whose dad lived down the block in a big 1920's Tudor-ish house. It had a little telephone room, which was the coolest thing ever. I think I need one of those!

I have a working old phone like the one on the right. The reciever weighs about 14 lbs. Talking on it is like driving a car without power steering. We had a phone (not quite as old as these) when I was a kid. Seemed like it only ever rang about once a week and sounded like an alarm bell. I think phones are widely overused today. I'll post my old phone soon.

I agree, especially cell phones. I hate talking on mine--and it's surprising I even have one because I didn't have a pushbutton telephone in my house until the 1990's.
Yeah, they weigh a ton. But don't they feel nice and substantial? Not like the flimsy crap they make today.
