My inspiration for this quilt came from the movie "The Matrix": the computer screens showing long columns of code streaking downward, with the leading characters brighter than the others. The first time I saw that image it made me gasp. I wanted my quilt to have a similar sense of motion, depth and sparkle. It's a departure from my usual scrappy style and I was pleased to have something so striking develop out of a challenge that initially felt restrictive and borderline impossible.
I chose a deep indigo for the background to provide strong contrast. I quilted with a free motion foot to quilt between the squares, allowing them to "pop" forward a bit. My friends keep referring to it as a waterfall, so I'm calling it "Cascade".
