From BBC news -
"Ellie Lawrenson was mauled to death at her grandmother's house in St Helens on Monday. Post-mortem tests revealed she died of severe head and neck injuries.

Her grandmother was badly injured in the attack by the pit bull terrier-type dog, which was later destroyed."

The little girl's family who described her as "A little angel" are devastated.

Worth thinking about?

gordon,

no.

a. titan is not a pit bull or bully breed dog. he is a french mastiff.

b. after 35 years of being around large dogs (including pits) i can tell you with all certainty, that there is no such thing as "a little angel" that kills kids. that dog was never ever a little angel, probably was extremely dominant, raised without exercise or discipline, and possibly was severely abused. our dogs are none of those things.

c. this is not a photo of a dog being vicious. this is a photo of a dog trying to catch a squeaky rubber ball tossed into the air, and the picture snapped right as he leaps for the ball.

d. i think that after 35 years of responsible dog ownership with large breeds, and four children and five grand children and hundreds of childhood friends and guests with zero injuries, my parents have a handle on raising safe, friendly, loving dogs.

e. the biggest worry a child has in our house is getting titan's tail to the head as he wags with such enthusiasm.

f. Beauty and the beastie.

Thank you for your polite and detailed reply.
You are obviously very experienced in these things. I am not.
It was a case of my seeing your photos of children with the dogs and not knowing about you or your dogs I wanted to raise the question having been concerned by the BBC report.
You have shown me the reassuring reality of your situation. Thanks.
Gordon.

Good reply to the person who posted about the pitbull attack. I never trust any of those stories that say things to the effect of "the dog was always fine and it just snapped one day." There are always reasons.

and I am all the way behind you regarding temperament and dogs that "snap." If a dog didn't tell you it was going to kill you, you just plain weren't listening and were doing something wrong to to make the dog want to.

Your dog is gorgeous, even in all his scary ball catching teethiness!

Can I just add, that good dogs do snap.

I was mauled by a family pet who was the picture of loving sweetness and cuteness and gentleness - until the day he decided my face was delicious and went the chew. I almost lost an eye and had over 100 stitches in my face and skull. I still have a dent running down my skull where one of his canines scraped off the bone.

Good dogs DO maul - but it's very rare, and only in some breeds.

You won't find a documented account of a French Mastiff EVER mauling someone unless that dog was maltreated.

pixelkitty, i'm very sorry to hear that. it's tragic that you had to endure such an attack. i have heard of some of these stories. thankfully, i've never seen one.

however, i have to ask, regardless of how sweet, was the dog dominant? did it have any checkered past? many people mistake dominance as sweet and loving. including people with lots of dog experience. when a dog climbs on you, lays on you, etc. lots of that behavior seems loving, but much of it can also be dominance. as with human behavior, most dog behavior has a reason or a source or a trigger. i just wonder if in fact there was an underlying source.

i hope you are still comfortable with dogs, and i am very glad you are ok. thanks for sharing your story.

Kitty Loves Japan  Pro User  says:

The dog was not dominant, was well trained. Came from an excellent breeder and had been to obedience training all it's life. He was 4.

As a German Shepherd, he was not a lap dog - he was extremely good with children and strangers.

The vet, who sadly destroyed the dog after the attack (Council and Law did it before I'd even gotten out of surgery), ventured that pheremones might be what triggers seemingly placid dogs to attack family members (or even complete strangers). It's an interesting theory.

We just need to remember that dogs are not people, they do have completely natural instincts to protect, defend, hunt and even kill somewhere deep in their doggy brains. (cats have the same instincts, so don't think your kitty bites you because he loves you, he might be trying to taste you :P)

I am not comfortable around large dogs at all now. They still terrify me. But I can totally see the cuteness and lovability of other's pets in photos :)

Pixelkitty, I wouldn't worry so much about cats trying to bite us to taste us. We're too big to make suitable prey for them, and they know that ;) Though, you are right, cats do have the same instincts, which is why my cat will just freaking *claw* at my skin if I'm doing something that scares her. Such as holding her while opening the door to the outside world (she's scared of outside), or carrying her down the steps of the basement (the stairs are dark, and probably look like a black hole to her...I think :/).

My current cat is incredibly mellow. She has *never* scratched me with intent to harm. She's nipped at me only 3 times in the 11 years we've had her. And before she nipped at me, she warned me with like 15-20 growls and maybe 2 or 3 hisses. She just loves people. She likes to sit in your lap (though, she'll sort of knead...well, tighten and loosen her claws while she's sitting, and that hurts, but she's not doing it with intent to hurt), and she loves taking naps with me. She has her own pillow, and actually the only times she's ever *truly* hurt/annoyed me is when she kneads at my hair. And it's my own fault that she does that, because I don't have the heart to teach her not to do that. Usually, I just pick up her frontal body and make it face away from me.

And this dog is all the awesome! :D It would've scared me when I was younger, and now I totally want to send my friends this link and scare the crap out of them with it! :D

Absolutely great photos. Wow. We have four kids and a mellow, well-trained GSD who weighs about 110 pounds. She is so good with the kids, but we never let our guard down. Animals are, after all, unpredictable. Our trainer helped teach us how to establish ourselves as lovingly dominant in the pack. It's a huge responsibility - had we not had a trainer for four months, I shudder to imagine what our dog would be like.

it's a shame that only owners of big dogs with big teeth get so many nervous (and well-meaning) warnings about how "gentle dogs bit too!" my dog is an australian shepherd, a breed not particularly known for biting, who nonetheless does bite, has bitten, and will bite again if another $&^#$ stranger insists on petting him despite my warnings and attempted body-blocks. he's hard for people to resist: so cute! so fuzzy! wiggling his tiny little docked tail! he's happy! he wants me to pet him! i lose sleep over this... it's my job to protect people from my dog, and they SO don't want to be protected.

see? don't you want to pet him too?

You can only do what you can do emily. And it sounds like you sure do try. I used to work for a vet and all of the dogs that came in with behavioral "issues" were not any of the usual suspects: no rotties, dobies, shepherds, pits, etc., etc. I remember one was a Wheaton Terrier. They don't get much cuter or fluffier than that!

Yankees Man, I know its an old thread, but oh how I agree with your comments about dominant dogs. You only hear one side of the story when you hear how somone had been mauled by a dog. Did anyone stop to ask just what the dog been put through? Dominant dogs are not happy dogs and they need careful training to make them realise their pack order (the bottom of it!) and only then do they calm down. It makes my blood boil when I hear that they've been routinely 'put down' after such an episode.
