Kelly Watch The Stars by theholyllama

Kelly Watch The Stars

Another year, another trip up to the Sir Tatton Sykes monument for a bit of meteor watching.

The Perseids shower comes around every August. This time the cloud cover was not too bad to start with, and while we waited for it to get properly dark we enjoyed some great views of the rising moon and Jupiter. By the time the meteors started appearing the clouds were building up, so I didn't manage to get any shots of them, although we did manage to see a few!

Span by theholyllama

Span

My last upload from our holiday in Northumberland is, fittingly, one taken on the journey home.

The Angel of the North is a 20m tall sculpture by Anthony Gormley. It weighs a total of 200 tonnes, has a wingspan of 54m and sits on 600 tonnes of concrete foundations in order to enable it to withstand winds of up to 160km/h.

The Angel is built on the site of a former coal mine pithead, on a hilltop site overlooking the A1 and the East Coast Main Line railway, and it is estimated to be seen by more than 100,000 people every day. Work began on construction in 1994 and was completed in 1998, with the sculpture itself being built in Hartlepool and then transported to the site for assembly and erection. It cost around £1m, mostly provided by the National Lottery.

Overlord by theholyllama

Overlord

Another shot of Bamburgh Castle, this time taken from the beach that runs below the outcrop of basalt on which the castle is built.

Upturned by theholyllama

Upturned

During his renovation of Lindisfarne Castle, Lutyens used upturned herring boats as storage sheds. To this day, boats are used in this manner at the castle and, as here, down by the harbour. Their form was cited by Enric Miralles as an inspiration when he was designing the new Scottish Parliament building.
