Majestic Norway

Please, please take a moment and view this in the lightbox!
As a big fan of mountains and cliffs, it would be a shame to have visited Norway and not tried to do justice to the magnificent fjords. This is my attempt.
The days on either side of this had some of the worst weather I've seen in a long time. The morning after this, myself and Greg Annandale were pretty much trapped on top of a mountain overlooking Bergen as a storm literally chased us under cover. We pretty much had the opposite problem when we toured the fjords; it was far too sunny and bright to get some decent shots. Given a tripod and a nine exposure HDR, we could have made some headway. Sadly, we had to settle for handheld HDRs from the back of a moving vessel.
I've been holding off processing a lot of Norway shots, as I wasn't too keen on some of them. Going through the archives at the weekend, I stumbled across this one and thought, with a few hours work, this could turn out quite nice. I hope it has. According to Greg, this is around the Nærøyfjorden area, a branch of the Sognefjord. Since 2005, the Nærøyfjord has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has also been rated by the National Geographic Society as the world's number one natural heritage site along with the Geirangerfjord.
You really, really, really must view this in the lightbox to see the grandeur of this location.

Wow, what a view, I can't believe that you dismissed this, and it's even harder to believe that you took this from a moving vessel!!
The scenary is stunning, and I love those contrails, great light too.
A few hours post eh......... I'm thinking that you've done this once or twice ;-)

From the sounds of things a lot of effort went into the processing of this shot. Clearly was quite bright and tricky without your tripod assisted HDR so this is an absolutely fantastic effort. Lovely blues and greens. Really glad you uploaded this.

Conor, thanks so much for sharing this with us. It's magnificent! I can't believe you got this shot from a moving vehicle, hand-held, and without a tripod! That's why I do that off of buses, trains, and cars. You just never know what you might get....better than missing the opportunity.
Great job in post-processing! I did view it in lightbox! What a gorgeous view this must have been. So sorry for the bad weather. Sometimes you just hit it right...sometimes nature is just that nature....

I hope you don't continue to hold back processing the Norway shots Conor, this one is fantastic! I can't believe it's handheld from the back of a moving vessel. Judging by this, it's easy to see why it's one of the world's most beautiful places and it's also easy to see that the rest of your Norway shots are bound to be amazing as well :o) Don't keep us waiting too long!
