Schine's Auburn Theatre, 12-14 South Street, Auburn, NY 13021

Schine's Auburn Theatre, 12-14 South Street, Auburn, NY 13021

A new attempt is being made to restore the landmarked Schine's Auburn vacant since 1992. Designed by John Eberson in an art deco style, the theatre opened September 15, 1938 with Errol Flynn in Four's a Crowd.
On October 12, 2000, I gave a talk "The Local Movie House-Entertainment, Architecture and the Community" presented by the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center and the Friends of the Auburn Schine Theatre (sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities).

Old Town Theatre, 815 1/2 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314

Old Town Theatre, 815 1/2 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314

This was my local movie house when I lived on Queen Street in 1970s. It has had a troubled history in recent years, opening and closing several times. In early January 2012, the marquee dimmed and the screen went dark once more, the theatre now standing empty awaiting possible conversion to retail use. What will become of the ghost in the projection booth who pinched staff members?

My Fair Lady, 1963, Deutsches Theater, Munich, Germany

My Fair Lady, 1963, Deutsches Theater, Munich, Germany

Rated 294 of 413 things to do in Munich by Lonely Planet Travelers, the Deutsches Theater was built 1894-1896 by the architects Alexander Blum and Karl Stohr from designs by Joseph Rank. Originally intended as a stage for spoken drama by young Naturalist playwrights, the neo-Baroque theatre quickly evolved into the Bavarian Royal Residence's most glamorous variety venue.
Due to current restoration work, the Deutsches Theatre is staging performances in a palatial tent at Frottmaning, equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
