I would also want friends to give me those stuffs that interest me most as presents. they could give me their old knitting needles, leftover yarns or unused embroidery threads and I will take care of them.

Perhaps you should tell them about it? I taught my friends that there's noting better than some threads or old fabrics or even old clothes that they won't use any more but are made of good fabrics. They give me sometimes things like that and it's very nice. I even got two old crocheted bedspreads as a wedding gift.
My husband always asks me, what I want to get and I always say "threads". This year he said it's boring to buy threads again so I chose craft books ;)
