Coast Horny Toady

Phrynosoma coronatum

Tehachapi, CA

One of the most docile lizards you will encounter, horned lizards, with their tank-like bodies and grumpy-looking faces have endeared themselves to people throughout their native range. Unfortunately, horned lizards across the Unites States are on the decline. Introduction of invasive ant species that crowd out the native harvester ants, habitat modification and fragmentation, as well as pesticides may all play a role in their decline.
