Mazel escaped Syria in 1978 with some neighbors by fleeing through the mountains, running only at night and sleeping by day, for fear of being caught by the murderously anti-Semitic Syrian army. Hungry and thirsty, they successfully crossed the border into Turkey, where with the help of JAFI in Istanbul, they acquired passports and flights to Israel.
Today, Mazal (word meaning “fortune” in Hebrew) lives alone. Her family and close friends have long since passed away. She has no children, and it is very hard for her to make ends meet with the small government stipend that she receives. She often does not have enough money to purchase her medications, pay her electrical bill, AND buy food, so she must sacrifice one or more of these ‘luxuries’ quite often. She is overcome with gratitude to Keren L’yedidut and its blessed supporters for their generous help.
Rabbi Eckstein delivered a blanket and check for 500nis.

The event was attended by Rabbi Eckstein, Zion Gabai, Diana Shimoni, and others from the Jerusalem office. Recipients were given blankets with the IFCJ logo on them and a check to be used to pay heating bills.
